Diffusion Processes in Turbulent Magnetic Fields

چکیده

We study of the effect of turbulence on diffusion processes within magnetized medium. While we exemplify our treatment with heat transfer processes, our results are quite general and are applicable to different processes, e.g. diffusion of heavy elements. Our treatment is also applicable to describing the diffusion of cosmic rays arising from magnetic field wandering. In particular, we find that when the energy injection velocity is smaller than the Alfven speed the heat transfer is partially suppressed, while in the opposite regime the effects of turbulence depend on the intensity of driving. In fact, the scale lA at which the turbulent velocity is equal the Alfven velocity is a new important parameter. When the electron mean free path λ is larger than lA, the stronger the the turbulence, the lower thermal conductivity by electrons is. The turbulent motions, however, induces their own advective transport, that can provide effective diffusivity. For clusters of galaxies, we find that the turbulence is the most important agent for heat transfer. We also show that the domain of applicability of the subdiffusion concept is rather limited.

Magnetic Transport On The Solar Atmosphere By Turbulent Ambipolar Diffusion

The lower solar atmosphere consists of partially ionized turbulent plasmas harbouring velocity field, magnetic field and current density fluctuations. The correlations amongst these small scale fluctuations give rise to large scale flows and magnetic fields which decisively affect all transport processes. The three fluid system consisting of electrons, ions and neutral particles supports nonide...

Diffusion and drift of cosmic rays in highly turbulent magnetic fields

We determine numerically the parallel, perpendicular, and antisymmetric diffusion coefficients for charged particles propagating in highly turbulent magnetic fields, by means of extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We propose simple expressions, given in terms of a small set of fitting parameters, to account for the diffusion coefficients as functions of magnetic rigidity and turbulence level, an...

Non-linear magnetic diffusivity in mean-field electrodynamics

AB S TRACT We consider non-linear transport and drift processes caused by an inhomogeneous magnetic field in a turbulent fluid. The coefficients of magnetic diffusivity and drift velocity are calculated by making use of the second-order correlation approximation. Transport processes in the presence of a sufficiently strong magnetic field become anisotropic with larger diffusion rate and turbule...

Hydromagnetic Turbulence

Recent progress in astrophysical hydromagnetic turbulence is being reviewed. The physical ideas behind the now widely accepted Goldreich–Sridhar model and its extension to compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence are introduced. Implications for cosmic ray diffusion and acceleration is being discussed. Dynamo-generated magnetic fields with and without helicity are contrasted against each oth...
